Shelly Mullen

shelly Hello. I'm new to the internet but I'm not new to brain injury. I suffered a severe brain injury on 5 Feb 1996 -- the result of a motor vehicle accident (mva). It happened at approx 4:35 pm as I was driving home from work that Monday. I was traveling at approx 60 mph when I had a head-on collision with a gentleman who was also on his way home from work. My injuries were severe and many -- I broke both legs (the right leg from the knee on down was what the doctor's considered "shattered"); I broke the right hip; my left hand; collapsed both lungs; had liver and kidney injuries; lacerations to my legs; and last but not least, the brain injury coupled with brain hemorraging. I suffered alot of pain, 4 mths in the hospital, and am consided by disability and Social Security as permanantly disabled. That's very difficult for me to accept seeing as how I put myself through 4 yrs of college to get my BS in Accounting, graduated at the top of my class, and had an excellent job as a bank accountant when the accident occurred. What caused the accident? Good question because I don't know. I have both retrograde and anterior grade amnesia (aka - post traumatic amnesia). I don't remember the day of the accident, even though I remember what I did the day before the accident, the accident itself, or for 4-6 wks after the accident. I can't and shouldn't whine and complain about my misfortune as at least I'm alive. The gentleman driving the other vehicle died enroute to the hospital and the doctors have reiterated over and over again that I'm lucky to be alive. Thank you, God. And thank you, God, for my accident. Yes, I lost a lot as a result of the accident but you have blessed and enriched my life in so many other ways. I would love to talk to other people who have experienced brain injury and the resulting chaos it can have on your life. Thanks for listening or should I say reading?! Hope to hear from somebody soon!!!!!
