Sharon A. Ihrig

On the Canadian Thanksgiving in 1974 (October 14) I was involed in a tragic car accident that left me comatose for 5-6 weeks and in a semi-coma or twilight period for the next few months after I emerged from the deep coma. I was in Scarborough General Hospital initially but after I awoke from the deep coma I was transferred to Port Colborne General Hospital. I was sent home on New Years Eve since I wasn't making progress in Port because I had my mind set on going home. I attended out-patient rehabilation for the next six months at the Niagara Penninsula Rehabilitation Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario. It has been a tough road relearning swallowing, walking, talking and things most people would never envision. After missing a year of high school, I returned to complete grade 13, even though it took me two years to complete because I was not able to handle that much new stuff at once.

I married my childhood love and we have two healthy children, a daughter born in 1980 and a son born in 1985. I suffered three miscarriages in between the children which were totally unrelated to my injuries.

Five years after my sons birth my gynocologist discovered a lump in my left breast, it was malignant. The cancer was also in my lymph nodes, 7 of 12 that were tested. I suffered a recurrance of the breast cancer in 1994 and within 2 years it was in my bones. My oncologist in Hamilton, Ontario asked if I wanted to take part in a clinical trial for a new drug, Herceptin. I agreed and have also made attempts to battle this disease on my own as well by changing my diet to eliminate all forms of estrogen, since I was estrogen positive and I drink Essiac tea nightly to hopefully stop this disease.

My mother died in 1989, 1 and 1/2 years before I was diagnosed with cancer. She was the person who had helped me get back to who I was. She died of a different form of cancer than what I had.

I am on the board of directors of the local head injury association. I have also taken a correspondence course through the mail, one at which I could work at my pace. It was not in the field I would have chosen before my accident.

I figure the Lord has a funny sense of humor and I give all praise to Him, He made me and with His help I shall push forward.
