Aloha my name is Shantell Kalama and I am 23 years old and live in Hawaii. My husband Keola is 26 years old and has been in a coma since April 29, 2000 and he also suffers from TBI. He was hit in the head while at football practice. It has been a long upcoming year for me. Keola and I have been together for a total of 9 years and 2 of them married. I love Keola more then anything in this world and it is very hard to see him this way everyday. I shut down my business to take care of Keola and I also go to school part time working my towards my AS degree in nursing and then Keola and I are off to the University of Washington where I will study for my MD in Neurology. I have learned a lot from Keolas accident and have grown up faster then I could ever imagine. One day I was a care free wife with my own business and then next day Im a caregiver struggling to get by. I have fought the state and insurance here many times as I am sure you all have, but we just dont have the kind of rehabs that they offer around the world. Living in Hawaii we are very limited to the facilities that we have. I love hearing from other care givers and suvivors so please feel free to email me anytime at email@example.com. Talking to others who know what I am going through everyday is what gets me by and also the will of the Lord to make something better of myself. Hope to hear from you soon.
