On July 8,1998 my life was changed forever. There had been a storm thenight before knocking down trees all over town. I agreed to clean up my bosses yard,My Aunt and Uncle and a co-workers yard. My son who was 15 at the time was helping me. We finished the first two yards. I told my son we would have to swing by and get our extension ladder because a limb was about 20 ft at the last home (my co-worker)I remember putting up the ladder on a large limb. I told my son if I got into trouble I would throw the chain saw. That was the last I remember. My co-worker tried calling 611 when my son helped him call 911. I had been knocked off the ladder falling backwards into the yard. I hit the back of my head on a solid 6" x 6" x 20" concrete block. I was told I got up and moved around until the ambulance came and got me to sit down. When I arrived at the local hospital I became disoriented and adjetated. The head Dr. made the decision to have me airlifted to Des Moines Iowa.
There my family met me in their ICU. I was in ICU for 11 days. Ihad punctured a lung, broke all of my ribs, and had blood in both ventricles of the brain. First they said they would see if there was swelling and they may have to go in and drain the blood. Neither happened. I went to recovery for 6 days, and then to Rehab, where my family began to fill in the story. They had talked to me in recovery and thought I would remember. I didn't. I spent 3 months in rehab where I became very depressed. I hadn't used any sick leave in 13 years so this kept some income coming in.I was checked into 3 different mental hospitals for depression and uncontrolled crying. The Dr. at the second hospital told my wife to find a group home or care facility for me They tried numerous anti depressants and shock treatment.I went home and back to work.My cognitive skills and short term memory, kept me from keeping my job of 13 years as a County construction & Bridge Inspector.
Now I work part time for a local Funeral Home where I had worked part time before my accident. I am on disability and I'm still on medication.Feel free to email me anytime.
