CPR GRATITUDE SPEECH PRESENTED BY
PETER LOOMANS
I would like you to take this true life story I am about to present to you to
heart. It will make an impact upon your life, career, and how you interface
with other people in the future.
I am honored to be speaking to you today,( literally ). My intentions are to
convey appreciation and gratitude of cardiac pulmonary resuscitation. In addition
I will provide some understanding of life after sustaining severe brain trauma.
At the young age of 19, I was attending college at the University of
Wisconsin-Waukesha. On October 8, 1992, during my second year at the university,
while leaving the college at noon, I was involved in a severe car accident. I was
side impacted by a full size truck and my vehicle was hurled into a ditch.
Miraculously, the driver of the truck that impacted me, just by chance happened to
be an off duty EMT. At the time when I was in college I drove a little hatchback
car, so a collision with his huge truck which he drove did not hurt him in the
least. He immediately got out of his vehicle to discover I was unconscious,
turning blue and not breathing. Immediately he realized resuscitation was needed
and he quickly administered CPR. I slipped into a comma shortly after arriving at
the hospital and I remained in that state for the next 12 days. I suffered
internal injuries which included: a severed kidney, collapsed lung, nerve damage
in my right arm and severe head trauma. A patient in the hospital for two months,
I began to relearn basic life functions. I received therapy for a year and a half
after my hospital release as an out-patient. Today I still live with the residual
side affects sustained from my injuries. I have currently just completed 1.5
years of college with a GPA of 3.01. This has been my third attempt back to
college besides struggling with over 26 job attempts which included: male nurse,
landscaping, printing industries, insurance companies, etc. I feel like a 40 year
old man with all the experiences I have endured through. I am thankfully only 31,
a young man who is in the best shape of his life with the intelligence to go along
with it. Although I do have a speech impediment, and no longer able to run or
compete in sports. Relatively small for all that I have endured. Now people can
t believe that I have gone thru the trauma I went thru. I only have 1 scar on my
elbow, and have gained back 50 pounds after being 103 pounds in the hospital. I
attend the fitness center 3 days a week, and bicycle outdoors. Currently, I am
searching for a life long career and just being thankful that I am alive. My new
endeavor is to be one of the most intelligent, strong, caring intellectuals that I
possibly can.
