"CHALLENGES AT TIMES AMONG OUR OWN PEERS AS SURVIVORS OF TBI/ABI BY OUR EXPRESSIONS."

Pearl,M.S.

REALITY-A MILESTONE-SURVIVAL

As peers we all have individual challenges.

To be told that we are "complaining or that we are not facing reality and that we should go seek help" when we are addressing peers or others in an attempt to express self, that does hit like a stone.

The guidelines set here for this site (tbihome.org) are what make it a haven of safety and respect and dignity for all.

The key is respect for all and not to be stereotypyed. Indeed each individual is unique and also each tbi/abi is unique so to be told to " get a life, move on, accept reality and don't complain" well those words cut into our hearts deeply.

Communication is the key and as we are so misunderstood by non tbiers and we all are struggling to survive, we all do not have the same medical coverages, nor do we all have family to support us, nor do we all have friends that will come to check up on us when we are in having bad days, nor do we ask for pity.

Respect and dignity are the key to our struggle to be accepted for who we EACH are, no not to be catered to, but to find a haven of safety.

As survivors we also need to respect all others views and many work so hard to overcome the challenges we individually face.

Respect too, when one has known of survivors that are in serious physical conditions due to tbi/abi and yes the can't begin to compete to be included in any forums, not even chatrooms as they can't even keep up with the speed. I learned the hard way to not to type so fast and it was dear friends, survivors that helped me to see that very thing called "consideration".

To have a place where we can express freely is incredible and to re-learn the basics of human function are milestones for some.

Some still have to be suctioned in their traechs, and can't talk, but use some means to communicate, yet their speech has been affected, and no they can't walk nor initiate conversations, nor express what is their needs, and yet there are many that live in a such a way post tbi/abi.

Sensitivity to each individual before condemning or misunderstanding what one reads, is part of re-learning for many.

Yet, just like they (highly functioning survivors) can express selves, many cannnot, so back to the compassion, understanding and giving of oneself to reach those that are left behind as they do not or cannot, keep up with the fast pace or even begin to live a life in comparison to other survivors that recovered incredibly, yet one cannot become embittered, not deny our existence in whatever capacity TBI/ABI has left us.

The beauty of this site (tbihome.org) is that many give back to others who cannot do as they do.

That is sensitivity at its best.

Respect, dignity, consideration and acceptance is what even other individuals (non tbi/abiers)work on. In fact management personnel are sent to seminars paid by their employers to learn how to deal with their co-workers. So how much more the same compassion to be expressed to survivors, caregivers, family and friends who face the Journey of Life Post TBI/ABI?

United effort has made this site to be one of outstanding support.

To publicly discuss others' "down days or confidentiality in a public forum" would simply devastate anyone.

Support and understanding and caring are unique qualities that are not found easily yet it is through the dedication of many at this site (tbihome.org), since its inception, that have helped thousands.

Awareness, education and support for one another is the key before we due to tbi/abi, cut off someone's only link to society, via participation here or in tbi chatrooms, particularly if they do not have anyone to support them nor any other means to reach out, so use this median as a tool to exist.

We all are in a struggle to live life to the fullest despite TBI/ABI, and have been spared death.

As variety of flowers and vegetation on this earth, so is the beauty of each individual that has suffered, tbi/abi and also to find a place where we all can come to be refreshed or to find a catharsis to pull us out of despair, there are no words that can express such appreciation for our host or each and everyone that has crossed our paths and we in turn, give back to others that come to this site.

Respectfully,

Pearl

NEW BEGINNINGS

Echoes of Voices

As one peers out a window to see the beauty of landscape so serene,

Autumn,Winter,Spring,Summer

Each season brings about change and refreshment,

Along with the daily coping of scorching heat,
Coldness that can be felt to the bone,
Allergies that make one not function,
Aches and pains as the Autumn brings change.

Change greeted yet so hard to accept at times,
However were it not for the variety of changes on this earth we were gifted with

We would be living in a sci-fi world of "Soilent Green" mentality.

Realities: each morning showers us with the sunrises then later the sunsets,

To compare each beauty is to deny its radiance,

Likewise, our own existence is part of the gift of life we were granted and thus we nurture, we water, we flourish.

To be among the garderners that care for the gardens is to be enriched to have the grand opportunity to feel, smell and touch the beauty of flowers, leaves, stems.

And to smell rain or watering upon the foliage we see before our eyes.

Thus in an arena, of which we all need nurturing and care, we become part of a composite. Each and every bloom or leaf is part of a lucious greenhouse that protects us from the rigid temperatures.

A smile, A kind word, Understanding and Caring all pour upon our soul as the dew falls upon this earth just like the kindness of all our peers.

All dependent on one another, none is without the other, the beauty of the Journey of Life Post TBI/ABI.

A home, A greenhouse, A soul nurtured.

A friend that blossomed from love, understanding, acceptance and caring by the love found within the the sphere of a Place called TBIHOME.
