"Artists with Brain Injuries" Los Angeles, CA, USA

~ About Us ~

“Artists with Brain Injuries”, Los Angeles, California, USA aspire to provide a positive pro-active approach towards Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) which I and fellow participants believe, creates a path for greater self-fulfillment. Any organization or company does not fund us; presently we are strictly a volunteer based initiative.

Our web sites and resources have been established to assist the Traumatic Brain Injury, Acquired Brain Injury (emphasis on Humanities of the Arts) communities, in acquiring new strategies for meeting the unique needs associated with both physical disabilities and hidden disabilities. Given there are no quick fixes for TBI/ABI, coping methods and strategies must often be redesigned, as there are many challenges to overcome within the TBI/ABI individual's various environmental settings.

Our resources and individual member stories address behavioral, academic, parenting, home environment strategies, vocational issues and relationship challenges, artists face post TBI/ABI. We strive to provide a wealth of insightful and pro-active strategies within a group setting or individuals that require assistance in daily living post TBI/ABI thru the various artistic mediums.

Our Mandate

Our mandate is to address every angle associated with Traumatic Brain Injury or Acquired Brain Injury, as Artists in all humanities of the arts, with a positive pro-active attitude.
The fact being, once we have been discharged from either an inpatient or outpatient facility, there are no provisions for artists to get assistance with supplies or physical help to create our artworks.

As art has proven to have a significant impact on our recovery it is with this view in mind, we seek public awareness and support along with advocacy on behalf of artists whose works may have been done prior to their TBI/ABI, along with artists of whom have been able to resume their skills post TBI/ABI and artists who due to their TBI/ABI may never be able to resume the level of their pre TBI/ABI artworks, due to the severity of their injuries, yet they are Artist at heart.

It was through having art programs or therapy in our recovery process that enabled us to utilize our skills. However once facilities are no longer available for us, it has a tremendous impact on our resources and makes it extremely difficult to continue the arts.

Art has been a tool that has a healing affects, a long-term positive impact in our process of recovery and adjustment towards resuming our lives in a productive way as members of our communities.

As a group, we can encourage, give emotional support and seek ways to continue our arts by community outreach. By providing a wealth of information, support, resources, and research updates we most importantly aim to ease the feelings of isolation and enhance the lives of children, adolescents, adults, their families and friends, whose lives are touched directly or indirectly by traumatic brain injury or acquired brain injury.

Participating artists of "Artists with Brain Injuries, have achieved recognition as artists with brain injuries in their communities. Some have had their artwork in Public Showings through out their communities and market their artworks within their communities as a means towards resuming a productive life as members of their communities.

With continued diligence we will remain determined in achieving recognition as artists with brain injuries in Los Angeles, CA, and through out United States as our website “Artists with Brain Injuries” display artworks of members through out the Nation. Other participating artists are from Canada, United Kingdom, Sweden and Scotland.

The respect and recognition of artists with traumatic or acquired brain injury as individuals with physical and/or hidden disabilities is imperative in establishing a strong base for individuals dealing with TBI/ABI. Ultimately, if we are to see TBI/ABI individuals reach their full potential, this disability must be recognized beyond its association with co-morbid conditions.

Our Goals

As we encourage accurate public awareness in communities and through out the Nation and the world about Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) as artists we hope to create a greater understanding of life post TBI/ABI as survivors and why there is a significant importance to offer an understanding, supportive and compassionate stance when coping with this disability.

The purpose for this group is to continue with art and find it beneficial to our lively hood and well-being. This goal can be attained by the support of others in the communities.
We seek as a group to establish a broad base of organizations and individuals with traumatic brain injury or acquired brain injuries and other neurological disorders as artists in various modes or mediums.

Our goal is to show our artworks to the public by Art show and thru our websites “Artists with Brain Injuries” Los Angeles, CA, USA and to reach out to other artists with disabilities and their caregivers regardless of the artists/survivors limitations to get started again in the arts.

Making a Difference Collectively

We are a group of artists with various disabilities; some physically visible disabilities, others are hidden disabilities that we struggle to work around them to enable us to reach our potential in the arts. We assist one another to overcome the barriers the barriers we face daily at the same tiime simultaneously endeavoring to create our artworks. By united efforts, sharing and exchanging ideas along with working in our individual arts, all benefit form the support and encouragement we receive from each other.

As a group, we can encourage, give emotional support and seek ways to continue our artsy by community outreach.

As peers, friends and artists, we all face similar challenges. We are dealing with issues such as continuing services and access to supplies. Once the medical or therapeutic programs discharge us, we no longer qualify for assistance, support and resources we need to continue with our art. The purpose for this group is to continue with art and find it beneficial to our lively hood and well-being. This goal can be attained by the support of others in the communities who enjoy all modes or mediums in humanities of the Arts. We seek as a group to establish a broad base of organizations and individuals with traumatic brain injury or acquired brain injuries and other neurological disorders.

Artist initiative creates awareness and displays survivors of TBI/ABI artistic ability and talent in various modes or mediums.

As a collective of Artists with disabilities with supportive environments and shared resources it provides outlets for our adjusted lives as survivors of TBI/ABI, that otherwise we could not accomplish alone.

Focus is on building a foundation of self-confidence, self worth and dignity.

Objective: Reach the souls of the artists whose determination and perseverance has been motivated to overcome obstacles beyond imagination POST TBI/ABI.

Artworks, music, writings, all open minds and hearts that awaken souls within us as survivors TBI/ABI or other neurological disorders.

Having a place to be among artists even if it is for an hour or less, a person with a disability can experience joy being among others who face similar disabilities yet strive to live life to the fullest. A person is refreshed, thus is made to feel better, and over the long term this collective artist initiative is saving costs for the healthcare programs and beneficial to all those involved in caring for the artist who has suffered traumatic brain injury, acquired brain injury or any other neurological disorder.

As artists in various modes or mediums, the majority of us are living proof that despite the fact we were classified as permanently disabled, and our families were informed to take us home or be placed in a home to live out our lives in wheelchairs and confined to a bed staring at a four wall prison of a room, our presentations, our websites, “Artists with Brain Injuries” Los Angeles, CA, USA display our efforts, determination, perseverance and artistic abilities that our minds and inner spirit set us free to live once again as the artists.

By referring to feedback we receive from the public, we are able to accommodate and tailor our organization to meet the needs of artists, survivors of Traumatic or Acquired brain, therefore truly appreciate your suggestions and comments. Feedback is a wonderful way of making a difference collectively, one person at a time.
