Kelly "specialk" Cahill

Update 01/23/03

My original story is still the same, but I thought I would add some positive light to a very negative story. It has been almost five years since my accident, and I am doing wonderfully! I am graduating from Northern Kentucky University in May of 2003! I will get my BA in History with a minor in Psychology, which then I will go right back to get an additional BA in Psychology. I intend to counsel other victims and families of TBI. I feel like since I have been given a second chance at life, then I will aid individuals and families who go through this traumtaic experiencel. As we all are well aware, TBI does not just affect the victim, but it affects the whole family. I would like to encourage any victim of TBI that it does not have to "end your life!" It will be a stumbling block, but not a dead end.

I look back at where I was four years ago, and I cannot even believe that I have come this far. Without the love and prayers of everyone concerned for me, I would not be approaching my college graduation date. I thank God every day that He has watched over me and guided me on my way.

God Bless everyone that reads this and feel free to email me any time!

Love,
Kelly

Original Story

On December 4, 1998 I was involved in a collison on interstate 75 North in Northern Kentucky around the Turfway only exit ramp. Someone cut me off and I swerved to miss hitting them and instead was struck by an enormous truck and pushed into the concrete retaining wall. I was flown by helicopter to the University of Cincinnati in critical condition. The paramedics intibated me on site, placed two chest tubes, and I was on a vent because I could not breathe on my own. I suffered punctured lungs, a lacerated splean, broken ribs, broken scapula, broken clavical, and most of all, a severe closed-head injuy resulting in a TBI.

The next thing I knew I was waking up in the hospital on January 8, 1999--I was told I was in a coma for five weeks. I was released from in-patient care on January 26, 1999 and was in out-patient care until March 15, 1999 when I moved back go Georgia with my mom & dad. I continued three forms of therapy(speech, occupational, and physical) until I moved back to Kentucky in July of 2000 to go back to college.

I feel like I am successfully completing my last classes to graduate in the spring of 2003. I cannot believe that I am back at school already, but miracles do happen. I feel like I am a walking miracle. I have been extremely blessed to have wonderful medical care and a supportive family. I feel blessed every day that I am still here to be grateful!
