Gordon "Gord" Walz

In 1993 I was diagnosed with polycythemia, a blood disorder that causes over production of all three blood cell line--white, red, and platelets. The only treatment then was phlebotomy, a polite medical term for bloodletting. Since my blood was so very viscous, there was a danger of heart attack, blood clots, and also hemorrhaging.
Well I did not have the heart attack, but pretty well everything else happened!

After a week of daily bloodletting, I was released from hospital, went home, and promptly had a sub arachnoid brain hemorrhage, followed by a massive clot formation on me brain frontal lobe.
That changed me a lot of course, and rehab since then has been difficult. I underwent a lot of personality change.

Now I inject myself 2-3 times weekly with chemo--Interferon A. It seems to hold my blood over proliferation in line, and it also helps with the systemic itching that is part of all this.
The side effects are tough though-- fatigue, nausea, some depression too.

the family had a lot to adjust to--I married young at 21 and we have 5 children--all grown now. One passed away just recently.

So life goes on,--but it is very hard now.

Happy to find this group and chat a bit.
