Denise A. "De" Patterson

On January 3rd, 1994, my then husband and I were planning on starting a family. I had a girlfriend visiting me from up north. We lived in Naples, Florida.

I had already been to the doctor in the morning, and my friend and I went out to get prenatal vitamins and lunch. We weren't 5 minutes from our house, when it happened. It was raining. I was at a stop sign. There was a car turning in. Thinking it was safe to go, I started turning left. There was a van behind the car turning in. The van decided go around the car and right and right into me! It crushed my beautiful, blue Taurus. My car spun around, I couldn't say how many times. My friend, thank God, only had a mild concussion. I wasn't so lucky. When my husband got to the hospital, the first doctor said I wouldn't make it through the night. So, my husband fired him! His thinking was that he didn't want a doctor that didn't have any faith in me! The doctor he did get, just didn't say either way.

I was in a coma that lasted 3 weeks. They kept me in that hospital til Valentines Day. Then they moved me via ambulance. They took me to a rehabilitation hospital in Sarasota, Florida. I spent 6 months in that hospital. After a major move and a divorce, I still have some problems, but I am getting by. I can't walk, by myself, yet, I can't talk, yet, and my right hand does it's own thing. I still have therapies, I don't work, I wish I did, and I've got great family support.

I'm continuing therapy. And I thank you for listening.
God be with us, all.
